Jurgen Klopp loses battle to have the 5-substitutes rule re-implemented in the Premier League

A report by Mirror has mentioned that the 5-substitutes rule, something Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp vocally supported in the past few months, has been rejected by the Premier League.

Majority of the top European leagues are using the 5-substitutes rule this season. The Premier League implemented it as well during ‘Project Restart’, but reverted to the traditional 3-substitute rule at the start of this season.

While managers such as Pep Guardiola have vocalised their support for the 5-substitute rule, no one has come close to matching Klopp’s vigorous efforts to have the rule implemented.

Speaking earlier about its importance, Jurgen Klopp said that it is necessary to avoid the ongoing injury crisis in the league.

“All the teams have to understand why it’s so helpful. It’s not an advantage, it’s a necessity. 100 per cent.”

Jurgen Klopp’s incessant efforts would have certainly played a part in the Premier League opening the rule to a vote again.

All 20 teams voted this over the implementation of the rule allowing 5 changes per game. The votes were a tie, with 10 managers voting for the implementation of the rule, while the other half voted against it. (h/t Mirror

This was far below the 14-6 majority vote needed for the Premier League to implement the ruling. However, one major change did come as a result of the meeting.

The vote to have the number of substitutes on the bench extended from 7 to 9 did meet the majority criteria. From now on, teams can name 9 substitutes on the bench, but can only make 3 substitutions.

No prizes for guessing what Jurgen Klopp’s reaction to the news would be. The German manager has seen an array of his first-team players get injured recently, and the saw the rule as a way of easing the injury crisis that many Premier League teams are facing this season.
