Manchester City’s tough schedule could aid Liverpool title resurgence provided they win at home tonight

Liverpool and Manchester City face each other once again in what has become the standout rivalry in English football today. Jurgen Klopp is one of the few managers who has a winning record against Pep Guardiola and will hope to leave his rival in the dust once again.

The Reds’ title defence has not gone according to plan so far. Injuries and what appears to be fatigue have taken their toll after two extraordinary seasons at the top level. They currently languish seven points behind Guardiola’s table-toppers, having played a game more.

A win tonight will rekindle hopes of a Liverpool resurgence. However, anything less than three points could spell the end of Liverpool’s title defence. Guardiola has a poor record at Anfield, having lost and drawn one of his five visits as City boss. He will have the opportunity to put those demons to rest tonight.

An unlikely ally

Liverpool do however have an ally that could help swing the title race in their favour. According to the Daily Mail, the Sky Blues face a challenging schedule ahead of them which could see them drop points in the coming weeks.

Guardiola’s side play seven of the Premier League’s current top 10 in their next 10 matches following the visit to Anfield. The Citizens have to face off against the likes of  Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Manchester United at home while also travelling to Arsenal, Everton, Leicester City and Aston Villa.

While it does represent a daunting list on paper, Guardiola’s side dropped only five points in the corresponding fixtures last season. Given their game in hand, Liverpool will still need to bridge two points, provided we beat the Blues tonight.

The likes of Everton, West Ham United and Aston Villa are all much-improved teams with a combative mentality and could pose to be potential banana peels for Guardiola’s side.

Liverpool, meanwhile, face five of the top ten sides in their next 10 fixtures. This includes trips to Leicester City and Arsenal, not to mention a home game against Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea and the Merseyside derby at Anfield.

Given how this season has gone so far, anything is possible and Liverpool will hope City slip up in the coming weeks. For their part, they cannot afford to do the same and will hope to put on a winning run to close the season. As they say, change begins at home and they will seek to get it rolling against City later tonight.
