A report by Liverpool Echo confirms that Liverpool have added Virgil van Dijk to their Premier League squad for the second half of the season despite his knee injury.
The Dutch defender suffered a torn ACL against Everton last year and was ruled out for most of this season. It remains unlikely that he would play again this season.
Jurgen Klopp, however, hinted that Van Dijk would be in the renewed 25-man squad as he hopes for a ‘miracle’. This would come as good news to Liverpool fans, who would now have renewed hope that the 29-year-old would feature before the end of the season.
It is evident that the Reds are not the same team this season as they were last campaign. Injuries to other centre-backs have further added to the selection headache.
Among those included in the 25-man list is new signing Ben Davies, who was signed by the club from Preston North End in the closing stages of the January transfer window.
Ozan Kabak does not need to be on the list as he is not 21 years old yet. Takumi Minamino is one notable name that drops out. (h/t Liverpool Echo)
The Japanese forward was loaned to Southampton before deadline day. The club would be hoping that they can pull a miracle as the second half of the season gets underway.
Klopp’s side have fallen way behind and are already 7 points behind league leaders Manchester City, having played one game fewer than the Citizens.
There is a chance to shave off some of that gap this weekend as Pep Guardiola’s men travel to Anfield on Sunday.
