Liverpool superstar could miss start of 2021/22 season due to Olympics

Mohamed Salah to request Liverpool permission to participate in the Olympics

According to the Mirror, Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah could potentially miss the start of the 2021/22 season as he plans to participate in the Olympics.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics were postponed to this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The quadrennial event will kick off on July 21 and run-up to the 7th of August.

And Salah is hoping to take part in the tournament as one of the overage players with the Egyptian national team. To that end, the Liverpool forward is set to request the club’s staff permission to allow him to participate, claims

Egypt FA President Ahmed Megahed.

The report claims that Liverpool have already once turned Egypt’s request down given that the club will be losing him again in January for the Africa Cup of Nations.

“Salah agreed to lead the Olympic team during the last camp of the Egyptian team. We contacted Liverpool to allow Salah to join the Olympic team, and they said they were waiting for the approval of the technical staff.

“But in the end, Liverpool refused the request because they do not want to lose the player at the beginning of the season, as well as next January with the Africa Cup of Nations, which will keep him from participating in the English Premier League matches.”

However, the 29-year-old is hopeful of convincing the club to let him enter the Olympics as well, claims Megahed.

“We spoke with Salah again. And he told us that he will make a new attempt with the technical staff of his team, to resolve the matter, and within the next two days he will find a way.”

Should Salah be allowed to participate and Egypt go deep in the tournament, he will miss the pre-season and will be lacking preparation for the start of the 2021/22 campaign, leading to him potentially missing the early parts.

With the 29-year-old likely to push for participating in the AFCON as well next year, Liverpool could have a tricky decision to make in the coming weeks.
