Report: PL rivals leading race for Euro 2020 star linked with Liverpool

Leicester leading race for Liverpool target Domenico Berardi

According to transfer news from Leicestershire Live, Liverpool are trailing Premier League rivals Leicester City in the race to sign Italy winger Domenico Berardi from Sassuolo this summer.

Berardi, 26, is a product of the Sassuolo youth academy and has spent the majority of his career with the Neroverdi barring a brief spell away on loan at Juventus. The versatile winger enjoyed one of his best seasons in 2020/21, plundering 17 goals and setting up eight more in just 30 Serie A appearances for Sassuolo. (h/t Transfermarkt

Berardi has also been in fine form for the Italian national team and played a key role in their recent 3-0 demolition of Turkey in the UEFA Euro 2020 opener. He has continued to make vital contributions as the Azzurri have now reached the finals of the summer extravaganza.

Naturally, Berardi’s exploits with club and country have piqued the interest of several clubs, including Liverpool. The 26-year-old can be a quality addition to the Reds’ forward line considering that Mohamed Salah had to carry the attacking burden all by himself at times last season.

With both Salah and Sadio Mane set for AFCON involvement at the start of the next year, it makes sense for Jurgen Klopp & co. to have enough options in the squad to cover for their absence, which is where Berardi would enter the picture.

However, it seems like Leicester City are currently leading the race for the Italian international, as per the report. In addition, there is also strong interest in the winger from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and AC Milan as well, complicating matters further.

More Liverpool News:

Berardi has had some solid, consistent performances with Sassuolo and is proving his mettle on the international stages as well. With his best years in front of him, making a move for the Italian would be a smart decision on Liverpool’s part. However, it remains to be seen if the Reds do go after him this summer.
