According to a report by the Irish Mirror, Liverpool are planning to offer captain Jordan Henderson a new contract at the club.
The Englishman is in the final two years of his deal that expires in the summer of 2023. The club is already planning a new deal for Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker, and Henderson has now joined that queue.
Henderson was signed for a £16million fee from Sunderland in 2011 by Kenny Dalglish. Despite struggling initially, he has established himself as an irreplaceable part of Jurgen Klopp’s team.
His most recent contract negotiations came in 2018, when he signed a 5-year deal at the club. Since then, he has tasted tangible success at the club and if his words from three years back are anything to go by, he could extend his deal at the club yet again.
“There is no other place in the world I would rather play football. I want to be here for as long as I can be. I’m so privileged to have been a part of this club for so long, and hopefully even longer now.”
The report mentions that Jurgen Klopp is a fan of Henderson on and off the pitch, and the new deal could see Henderson end his career at Anfield.
That comes as no surprise, as the former Sunderland midfielder is visibly the leader on the field, both for England and Liverpool. It has come to a point where his name is deserving of comparison with the great Liverpool skippers of the past.
While it always raises eyebrows when he is compared to Steven Gerrard, the player he took the armband from at Liverpool, it is now fair to mention the two in the same sentence considering Henderson’s impeccable trophy cabinet in the last couple of years.
