Report: Key factor that could hamper Liverpool’s summer transfer plans

According to the Mirror, Liverpool and Michael Edwards are facing a different challenge in their efforts to reinforce the squad this summer.

The Reds have been one of the most astute clubs in the market in recent times. Edwards and Jurgen Klopp have not just sold off deadweight for a small fortune but also brought in players who have developed into world-class talents at Anfield.

Despite the squad having a few gaping holes, Liverpool’s business this summer has been largely low profile. The Reds moved early to land Ibrahima Konate but have since focussed largely on outgoings rather than incomings.

While a number of players have been linked to the club, there appears to be at least on the surface a lack of progress in their pursuit. According to the report, that may be thanks to a major handicap the club has.

Signing Konate meant Liverpool have filled up their permitted quota of 17 non-homegrown players in the squad. This means the club will now have to free up space in the squad before making further additions.

While it does not necessarily stop us from bringing in players who are non-English, Klopp will need to make space in his roster to include them in the season’s squad. This could, to a large degree, explain why the Reds are keen to get a number of players off the rolls this summer.

The futures of Divock Origi, Xherdan Shaqiri, and Takumi Minamino have all been brought into question. Selling any or all of them will not just boost our transfer kitty but also free up space for potential additions.

There is always the possibility that the trio could just be left out of the squad if no buyer can be found. That is not, however, without its risk as it could drastically lower their transfer value in the future.

It will be interesting to see just how Liverpool go about tackling the issue. Whether it involves selling players or maybe focussing on bringing in homegrown players remains to be seen. Whatever be the approach, we can not afford to stand still while those around us strengthen.
