Spanish outlet Sport (h/t Daily Star) has updated about Liverpool’s search for a midfielder. According to the report, Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez is a top target for Liverpool. The Reds are favourites to secure the signature of the Spaniard.
Saul could have lost his place in the Atletico Madrid starting line-up. The situation is caused by the arrival of Rodrigo de Paul from Udinese this summer.
Klopp has lined many players up as Gini Wijnaldum replacement. However, Saul tops most of the headlines. The midfielder has a €150million release clause. However, the report adds that it would take over €40million to get this deal over the line.
The 26-year-old has come up the ranks of Atletico Madrid. Atletico’s youth team signed him in 2008. Saul made his first-team debut in 2012. Since then, the midfielder has made 337 appearances for the Spanish side. As per Diego Simeone, Saul’s biggest trait is his versatility, a player on who a coach could rely.
“He (Saul) is very important for Atletico because he can play as a full-back, right-wing, midfielder. He is a player who, in that version and playing how the coach needs him to, performs very well.
The manager added that the player has all the qualities to be among the best midfielders in the world.
The departure of Gini Wijnaldum has left a spot open at Liverpool. There is uncertainty over the future of Jordan Henderson. Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have struggled with injuries in recent seasons.
The player, as mentioned above, could provide cover for all those positions. However, it’s the question of whether Liverpool and Atletico Madrid come to terms.
