Long term Liverpool target Renato Sanches holds Barcelona talks

According to sport.es (h/t Express), Liverpool are set to receive a huge blow in their pursuit of Portuguese midfielder Renato Sanches. The club have been targeting Renato Sanches for a long time. However, the 23-year-old has held talks with Barcelona president Joan Laporta over a possible switch to Spain.

The report adds that Lille would be a tough side to negotiate regardless. This would come as a huge warning sign in the Liverpool camp. The youngster could be an ideal replacement for Gini Wijnaldum. However, the club will now face heavy competition from Barcelona.

On Renato Sanches

Renato Sanches came through the grades of Benfica. Bayern Munich soon spotted the brilliance of the player. In 2016, the Bavarians signed him. However, he would go through a rough patch.

The Portuguese starlet was loaned out to Swansea the following season. The issues were still there for him as manager Carlos Carvalhal said that the player stopped learning ever since he left Benfica.

Lille signed Renato Sanches in 2019. The 23-year-old rejuvenated his career at the French club. He played a prominent role in the club’s 2020/21 Ligue 1 winning team.

Sanches continued his form with a brilliant run at the UEFA Euro 2020.

Do Liverpool need Sanches?

As mentioned earlier, Gini Wijnaldum has left the club. The club are yet to make a signing in that area. Unless the club are thinking about filling the spot with Curtis Jones, a hole is there to be filled.

Renato Sanches, 23, could be a great option for Jurgen Klopp. However, one would assume that Lille would demand a hefty fee for the midfielder.
