Transfer News: Liverpool plotting a move for Rennes winger Jeremy Doku
According to transfer news from Voetbal24 ( h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have their eyes set on Rennes’ Belgian winger Jeremy Doku.
The report adds that the club sent scouts to watch the player in action during Euro 2020. The Reds were impressed with his performances at the campaign and are keen on making an offer. However, Rennes won’t easily let go of the player. The report mentions that it would take at least £38m for the signature of Doku.
On Jeremy Doku
Rennes signed Jeremy Doku from Belgian giants RSC Anderlecht in 2020. And the move has certainly worked out, even though his return of two goals and four assists from 38 games tell otherwise. His performances at UEFA Euro 2020 have only elevated his stock, with Liverpool an admirer from a long-time.
Indeed, Liverpool came close to signing him when he was 15, but the youngster snubbed the move. In an interview, Doku revealed why the deal did not happen.
“I was going to be 16 and that was the age you can sign a pro contract. A lot of teams came to see me.
“I know what route I needed to take and I knew at that moment I needed to stay at Anderlecht.”
Do Liverpool need Doku?
Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah have done wonders for the club ever since joining. The duo has played a massive part in Liverpool’s recent success. However, both are approaching their thirties. It might get difficult for them to maintain their levels in Jurgen Klopp’s high-intensity system.

Furthermore, the duo will be away for AFCON duty this season and the Reds will need to have depth for when that happens.
Hence, someone like Doku could be a perfect signing. The 19-year-old would get time to settle in and have a clear path to the first-team when it is time for the stalwarts to step aside.
