Liverpool’s stance on transfer approach for Xherdan Shaqiri

According to the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool have received an offer for Xherdan Shaqiri. Olympique Lyon have shown an interest in the former Bayern Munich man. However, the report states that the French club are a “long way apart” from Liverpool’s valuation.

The Merseyside club are looking to recover the £12million figure they paid to sign Shaqiri in 2018. Lyon will need to increase their offer “considerably” if they want to secure the signature of the player.

Shaqiri’s game time has become limited in the recent past. The player is looking for more first-team actions and hence has expressed his desire to leave. The report from Echo adds Sevilla, Villareal, Napoli and Lazio as other parties interested in Shaqiri.

However, it seems like Liverpool are not looking to budge on their valuation.

Shaqiri’s desire to leave Liverpool

Liverpool signed Shaqiri from Stoke City in 2018. The player’s stock was at a high following his individual heroics with Stoke. However, his move to Anfield has not worked as one would have thought.

Shaqiri has been outspoken about his desire to move. In an interview with Corriere dello Sport (h/t Express), he hinted at a possible move to Italy. However, he was clear about the fact that he has communicated with the Liverpool board about his situation.

“I told the Liverpool board I feel ready for a new challenge. Who is not in love with the Italian lifestyle? What is really striking is the Italian love for football. It is life in Italy. The fans are incredible.”

As mentioned above, Shaqiri’s game time has been limited at Anfield. However, he played a prominent role in Switzerland’s Euro 2020 campaign. The 29-year-old scored three goals during the tournament and helped his nation to a quarter-final finish.

While an exit looks likely, it remains to be seen if Lyon or any of the other suitors are willing to meet Liverpool’s valuation.
