Liverpool could sign Kylian Mbappe from PSG on a free transfer next year

According to the Liverpool Echo, Kylian Mbappe could sign for Liverpool on a free transfer next summer when his current contract expires with Paris Saint-Germain.

The French superstar, who joined PSG from Monaco in 2017, will be out of contract next summer and has apparently refused a contract extension at the club.

While Real Madrid are interested in the forward, Liverpool are not too far behind in the race. Transfer expert Ian McGarry spoke on the Transfer Window podcast (h/t Liverpool Echo

), about Kylian Mbappe’s situation and how the Frenchman could move on a free transfer next summer.

He said (h/t Liverpool Echo):

“Our understanding is that while Liverpool can’t necessarily afford a transfer fee in the region of what Chelsea paid for Romelu Lukaku, they can afford a move for Mbappe under freedom of contract next summer when he will be out of his current deal with PSG.”

McGarry also talked about Mbappe’s admiration for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

“Of course, the wages will be substantial, but again, Mbappe is interested in making the move to Liverpool, something that Jurgen Klopp has a central role in, in regards to Mbappe’s respect and admiration for the German coach”.

The Reds have been keen on adding more reinforcements to their frontline this season, and with Xherdan Shaqiri on the cusp of leaving the club, there would be a vacant slot in the attack.

While it is highly unlikely that Mbappe will occupy a bench role at Liverpool, he certainly gives them a different dimension going forward as he could act as an out-and-out centre-forward. 

Moreover, with both Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah turning 30 next year, Kylian Mbappe could provide a youthful approach, and given his age, he could set Anfield alight for several years, should the Reds persuade him to sign on a contract at Liverpool next summer.
