According to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo via Sport Witness (h/t Mirror), Liverpool are ‘probing’ the possibility of re-signing former playmaker Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona.
The 29-year-old Brazilian enjoyed a fine five-year stint at Anfield, having joined the Reds from Inter Milan in January 2013. Coutinho established himself as one of the finest creative midfielders in the Premier League during his time with Liverpool, racking up 201 appearances in which he scored 54 goals and set up 45 more.
In January 2018, the ex-Inter Milan ace secured a dream move to Barcelona in acrimonious circumstances, but the move has failed to work out as he would have imagined. Coutinho, after an initial six-month spell where he impressed, has been on a downward spiral since.
A loan move to Bayern Munich in 2019/20 also failed to reignite the spark and while he was brought back into the fold at Barcelona last term, an injury in December ruled him out of action, with the Brazilian still recovering.
Reports in Spain (h/t Liverpool ECHO) have indicated that Barcelona are looking to sell Coutinho before the end of the transfer window, with Liverpool having ‘probed’ the Catalans on more than one occasion to check the possibility of bringing him back to Anfield.
However, the report from ECHO goes on to add that these claims are well wide off the mark, with Liverpool not considering any such move at the moment.
Coutinho was a top player for Liverpool when he was at the club. However, it is quite clear that he has declined since moving to Barcelona and bringing him back would serve little purpose for Jurgen Klopp & co.
