Xherdan Shaqiri exit talks stall as Lyon struggle to fund move

According to French outlet Le Progres (h/t Mirror), Ligue 1 outfit Olympique Lyon are finding it difficult to push through a move for Liverpool star Xherdan Shaqiri.

The 29-year-old has been with Liverpool for three years now, having arrived from Stoke City in the summer of 2018. While Shaqiri has made valuable contributions to the side whenever called upon, he has never quite really been able to nail down a spot as a regular starter.

Indeed, the Switzerland international has featured in just 21 Premier League matches over the last two seasons combined, indicating how starved of game-time he has been. Given the situation, both Liverpool and Shaqiri are ready to part ways this summer, with Lyon interested.

However, a move to the French giants is proving to be difficult to complete as Les Gones are unable to meet Liverpool’s transfer fee demands for the former Bayern Munich and Inter Milan star, while they are also finding it hard to put together a financial package for the player himself. It has been slow going for Liverpool in the transfer market this summer, having made just one signing so far. More transfers will hinge on them being able to offload fringe players, such as Shaqiri, but it is proving difficult to get rid of him.

Despite the inactivity in the transfer market, Liverpool have started the season strongly, registering back-to-back wins against Norwich City and Burnley. But with just a week left for the window to close, adding at least another player, in midfield, to replace Georginio Wijnaldum should be something to consider for the Reds.
