Report: Liverpool ‘like’ 36-year-old Scotland goalkeeper

Transfer News: Liverpool believed to be admirers of Derby County stopper David Marshall

According to a report by Daily Mail (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool ‘like’ Derby County and Scotland goalkeeper, David Marshall.

The 36-year-old stopper joined the Rams from Wigan Athletic last summer and went on to make 33 appearances for them in all competitions last season.

Marshall is is a highly experienced goalkeeper who has spent the majority of his career in the Championship. He has enjoyed Premier League football with Hull City and Cardiff City.

But of his 554 career appearances so far, 438 have come in England’s second-tier league. He is also a tried and tested goalie for the Scottish national team, and represented them at the 2020 UEFA Euros this summer.

Should LFC go for Marshall?

If he does come in at Anfield, albeit there being no real indication pointing towards that, Marshall would definitely be in the lower rung of the goalkeeping pecking order.

The Reds already have Alisson Becker in front of the queue, with Adrian San Miguel and Caoimhin Kelleher also with the first team this season. The Reds would be wise to focus their attention elsewhere.

Marshall, 36, is not much of an urgency right now. If there is any position to be strengthened, it lies further up the pitch. With Xherdan Shaqiri and Geroginio Wijnaldum’s departure this season, the club should look to replace them in some capacity.

While Harvey Elliott has looked like he will get some minutes, an experienced attacker is something that the club should bring in right now. Whether they get anyone else in on top of Ibrahima Konate this summer – David Marshall or not – remains to be seen.
