“Move forward”- 30-year-old Ligue 1 star explains why he left Liverpool this summer

Former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum claims he was not wanted at the club before PSG transfer

According to L’Euipe (h/t Daily Mail), Georginio Wijnaldum has opened up about his departure from Liverpool, stating that he did not feel like he was wanted at the club anymore. This saw the Dutch midfielder make his move to Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer. The midfield, however, was crucial in the club’s success in winning the Champions League in 2019 followed by the Premier League triumph of 2020.

The Dutch midfielder, during his time at Anfield, had a total of 237

appearances for the Reds in all competitions. In that time, the player managed to score 22 goals for his side. However, the player failed to negotiate a deal with the Premier League giants in extending his stay at the club. After the negotiation broke down with Liverpool, the player was approached by Barcelona, who were leading the race to sign him.
Georginio Wijnaldum was a key player under Jurgen Klopp.

However, much to Barca’s disappointment, the French club PSG moved in quickly for the player and signed the midfielder on a three-year deal. Wijnaldum speaking to L’Equipe (h/t Daily Mail), explained why he made the decision to join the Frech club this summer, he said:

“You follow your feelings. Several months ago, I had expressed the desire to stay in Liverpool but, without getting into details, Liverpool did not give me the feeling of wanting to keep me. In these cases, we have to move forward.”

“Barcelona came. I was happy, it was the club of my dreams even if I must admit that my idol was Zinedine Zidane. I had a good idea to commit to Barca. But the negotiation lasted a very long time and Paris came.”

Gini Wijnaldum made his move to PSG from Liverpool this summer.
