Liverpool ready to swoop in for Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini
According to CalcioMercato (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are considering making a move for AS Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini.
The 25-year-old has come through the ranks of the Italian club and is today an integral part of this Italian giants’ setup. He has made 160 appearances, scoring 27 goals and making 36 assists for the Giallorossi in all competitions.
Pellegrini is one of the players who have benefitted from the appointment of Jose Mourinho at the Stadio Olimpico. The midfielder has scored six goals and made two assists in eight appearances across all competitions.
The Italian international’s contract expires next summer and he is yet to pen fresh terms. This has caught the attention of a number of clubs from across Europe who are looking to take advantage of the situation.
Liverpool and Barcelona remain keen but could have their work cut out. This is because Pellegrini and Roma appear to be on good terms. According to the report, matters are already in place for a new contract to be signed.
A versatile player who can play a dual role in midfield, Pellegrini would be a shrewd acquisition for Liverpool, especially if he is signed for free. Both Naby Keita and Thiago Alcantara are injury prone and the Reds could do with another option thrown into the mix.
With Harvey Elliott also out injured, Jurgen Klopp’s side could do with more depth in the middle of the park. It is extremely essential if Liverpool are serious about competing on multiple fronts.
Mourinho rates Pellegrini very highly and it will be a surprise if he accepts defeat in the pursuit of keeping the player too easily. The Portuguese manager has in no uncertain terms described the 25-year-old’s role in his system.
“If we had three Pellegrinis, they would all be starting the game at the same time. They would never stay all three in the bench.”

Pellegrini could be a great fit for Liverpool. Jordan Henderson and James Milner are not getting any younger. Securing the Italian will not just get the Reds a midfielder but also add another name into the leadership matrix.
Henderson and Milner arent just consummate professionals but also the club’s leaders. In Pellegrini, Klopp could be getting himself an able replacement. While Liverpool could do with such a player, there is little to suggest he is ready to part ways with Roma yet.
