Liverpool release new statement amongst allegations and European Super League links

Liverpool have released a statement that denies any kind of interest from their side in the proposed European Super League.

According to The Guardian (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have reaffirmed their stance of not wanting to be involved in the proposed European Super League.

The Super League was initially backed by 12 teams across Europe which proposed an annual competition amongst these clubs. The plans of an ESL caused a lot of chaos and furore among the fans across the globe. The situation escalated to such a point that Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, and AC Milan decided to drop out of it.

Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Juventus are still backing their stance on the formation of an ESL. These clubs have taken UEFA to court with A22 (the umbrella company behind the ESL idea). The pandemic has caused a lot of financial stress on most clubs across Europe. These three teams had to incur huge losses due to the financial distress caused by the pandemic.

“The reality is that there is no civil war. Many clubs in Europe are happy with the fact that these three clubs are the voice of their frustrations and have the strength to fight the case to its conclusion despite the acts, threats, and name-calling of UEFA and others.”

Most of these teams were forced to apologise to their fans and several members of the managerial hierarchy were also forced to resign from their posts. The global footballing world was clearly outraged at the thought of another league.

UEFA has also taken several jibes at the proposed ESL referring to it as a grave danger to the foundation of European football. The Liverpool spokesperson gave a statement regarding the matter

“Our involvement in the proposed ESL plans has been discontinued. We are absolutely committed to following that through and there should be no ambiguity to suggest otherwise.”

The Merseyside team as well as the other Premier League teams have firmly denied any further involvement in the European Super League.
