Benjamin Pavard claims to be a more complete player than Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold
Speaking to Canalplus, via The Independent (h/t Liverpool Echo), Benjamin Pavard has claimed to be a better and complete version of Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Bayern Munich right-back boasted about his abilities ahead of their UEFA Champions League clash against S.L. Benfica.
The French international was assessing his abilities as a right-back by comparing himself to Alexander-Arnold and Paris Saint-Germain’s Achraf Hakimi. He was also seen to strangely refer to himself in a third person.
Although a natural centre-back, Pavard was deployed as a right-back in France’s journey to World Cup glory in 2018. He has rekindled that role as a full-back at Allianz Arena following his move from VfB Stuttgart in 2019.
The Frenchman is certainly a capable player in his own right. He goes on to add that while he may not be eye-catching like his rivals, he remains a more complete player.
“On paper, Pavard is perhaps less sexy than Hakimi or Alexander-Arnold, but I think that defensively I am more complete.”
While the Reds right-back often faces criticism for his defending, his offensive output puts him in a league of his own. And in a way, Pavard is more ‘complete’ for his defensive work but the English right-back is better going forward.
“Great coaches put me at right-back because they have confidence in my abilities.”
Same position, different roles?
Alexander-Arnold’s role at Liverpool is to provide width first and defend next. The youngster’s defensive issues are often exaggerated and he more often than not gets the better of his opponents.
Pavard is welcome to his opinion and we hope Alexander-Arnold does his talking on the pitch rather than off it. A potential meeting of both sides later on in the tournament could end the debate once and for all.
