Steve McManaman believes Liverpool can hit the jackpot if they land Ousmane Dembele for free
Talking to horseracing.net (h/t Liverpool Echo), Steve McManaman has said that signing Ousmane Dembele on a free could prove to be excellent business by Liverpool. The winger’s contract is set to expire next summer meaning he will be a free agent soon.
There have been talks between Dembele’s representatives and Barcelona regarding a renewal. However, no progress has been made as Barca are keen for the Frenchman to accept a lower wage.
McManaman believes that the Merseyside club should take a risk on a player of his quality. He further goes on to say how a free transfer could be a great piece of business for the club.
“If they could get him on a free contract and get the deal sorted then I don’t think there’s any problem with that.”
The former Reds midfielder added that Dembele’s connection with Jurgen Klopp could hold the key to getting a deal done. The 24-year-old had previously said that Klopp wanted him at Anfield but he decided to go to Borussia Dortmund instead.
“Liverpool will do their due diligence on him and whether they take that punt or not is another thing. However, a really talented player available on a free transfer is certainly worth a risk.”
Dembele has had his moments at Barcelona. However, he has failed to fully realize his potential. With the Catalans now in a state of limbo, he will be wise to seek a fresh challenge elsewhere.
Liverpool not only have an excellent sporting project but are also not in a financial mess like Barcelona. More so, in Jurgen Klopp, they have a manager who is a proven maestro at developing talent.

While it is risky to sign an injury-prone player like Dembele, his ability as a footballer and his age mitigate the risks. If Liverpool can aid him in staying fit, they will be landing themselves a real talent for nothing.
