“So passionate”- Former Premier League star backs Liverpool legend to take over at Newcastle

Ryan Taylor wants Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard to take over at Newcastle United

According to Sky Sports (h/t Liverpool Echo), former Newcastle United defender Ryan Taylor wants the club to make an approach for Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard to succeed Steve Bruce as their next coach.

The Magpies sacked Steve Bruce last week following their multi-million takeover by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. He parted ways with the Magpies after more than two years in charge, having steered the club to 13th and 12th-place respectively in the Premier League.

However, Newcastle have struggled this season and it was not something the new owners were willing to stand by and look on at. They were in attendance on Sunday in the 3-2 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at St James’ Park. Bruce sacking soon followed the disappointing result.

Taylor has urged the club to stick to an English manager who is well versed with the English top flight. A Hall of Famer, Gerrard certainly fits that bill.

“Hundred per cent stick with an English manager. Someone who knows the Premier League.”

Talor goes on to add that Gerrard will bring passion back to Newcastle. The Magpies have at times looked devoid of ideas or identity.

Gerrard has done an excellent job at rangers, bringing back joy to the Ibrox. Newcastle will give him the first opportunity to test himself in the Premier League.

“I would love to see someone like Steven Gerrard in charge of Newcastle. It’s so passionate up there and coming from this city (Liverpool) he will know what passion is all about.”

Also linked with the Newcastle job is former AS Roma boss Paulo Fonseca. However, Gerrard continues to be in the fray. Testing the waters before potentially taking over from Jurgen Klopp could be on the cards.
