Liverpool to miss out on bumper Philippe Coutinho payout from Barcelona

Liverpool miss out on €20 million bonus from Barcelona after Philippe Coutinho’s 100th game

According to Mundo Deportivo (h/t SI), Barcelona will not pay a bonus to Liverpool after Philippe Coutinho made his 100th appearance for the club.

Coutinho was sold to Barcelona in January of 2018 for a whopping sum of €135million, which in the process, became Liverpool’s record sale for a player in their history.

On Tuesday night, the Brazilian midfielder took part in his 100th official match for the Spanish giants against Rayo Vallecano in La Liga. In those 100 games at the Catalan side, he has 24 goals and 14 assists, as well as having spent a season on loan at Bayern Munich.

During Coutinho’s move to Camp Nou, it was rumoured that Barca would owe Liverpool a bonus of around €20million if the midfielder made 100 appearances for the club.

But later on according to Mundo Deportivo (h/t SI),  there was never such a thing as a bonus after 100 appearances, putting an end to the story.

Coutinho was one of the crowd favourites during his time at Anfield. The attacking midfielder scored 41 goals and also gave 35 assists in the Premier League for the 19-time Champions.

Liverpool were reluctant to let him go, obviously, as he was their best attacker at that point. However, Coutinho was determined to leave. Since then, despite being a marquee signing for the Catalan club, unfortunately for him, he was anything but that over the course of the next four years.

Barcelona Crisis!

The Catan club is currently in crisis on the pitch and off it as well. They have suddenly found themselves in a tough spot with debts that could have left the club nearly broke.

Lionel Messi had to leave as the board couldn’t comply with the La Liga salary cap and because they had previously failed to release other players to reduce their wage bill.

While on the pitch, Barcelona are currently 9th in the La Liga table after 10 games. They have managed to win just four out of it.
