Liverpool leading race to sign 19-year-old making waves in the Championship

Liverpool are leading the race to sign Fulham youngster Fabio Carvalho

According to TEAM talk (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are believed to be the frontrunners in the race to sign 19-year-old Fulham attacker Fabio Carvalho.

The teenager has come up through the ranks at Fulham and is attracting considerable interest from fellow English clubs. It is believed that Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and Southampton are the frontrunners.

According to the Athletic (h/t Liverpool Echo), the young attacker has turned down a new contract to stay put at Craven Cottage. This has created an air of uncertainty and alerted several clubs to his availability.

Fabio Carvalho has been attracting interest from several Premier League clubs

The teenager has already scored four goals and provided one assist in 13 matches across all competitions for The Cottagers. The Reds have a great rapport with Fulham as Harvey Elliott also made his way from Craven Cottage to Anfield.

Elliott was starting to cement a regular place in the starting lineup for Liverpool but a horrific injury against Leeds United in their Premier League fixture this season could see him miss the rest of the season.

The 19-year-old Carvalho brings a certain versatility along with him, as he can be deployed as an attacking midfielder or winger. Jurgen Klopp could welcome some reinforcement in the attacking department.

Building for the future

In the last couple of seasons, The Reds have struggled with several injury issues. This along with the burdens of playing across several competitions can take its toll on the best of players. The German manager has always preferred to give young talented players an opportunity in domestic cup competitions. This has been a great launching pad for quality talent in the last few seasons.

Carvalho’s addition could give the former Borussia Dortmund manager the option to rotate and preserve the fitness of key players. If nurtured properly the Portuguese-born player could be a great long-term asset for the club.

It is said that the Merseysiders are currently one of the top teams in contention and his addition could have a significant impact at Anfield. It could also help spruce up competition for attacking spots in the next couple of seasons if any deal were to take place.
