Michael Edwards to end his 10 years collaboration with Liverpool at the end of the curent season

According to The Guardian, Michael Edwards has decided to step down as the Liverpool sporting director at the end of this season. 

The Reds recently ended their 30-year title drought and also won their sixth European title. Even though Jurgen Klopp had a huge role in the club’s success it is debatable that he would have been successful without the help of Edwards’ key signings.

Michael Edwards who joined the club in 2011 has come momentarily on headlines due to big signings in the past.

Being in charge of transfers and scouting of players, he has worked closely alongside club manager Jurgen Klopp and FSG president Mike Gordon. He has brought in several players who have changed the club’s fortunes. 

His time at Liverpool football club is a success due to the recruitment of key players like Sadio Mane, Alisson, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho to anime a few. 

Julian Ward, who is currently serving the post of assistant sporting director, will be promoted to take on the senior role. He joined the Reds’ recruitment and scouting team from Manchester City in 2012. 

There were huge speculations about Michael Edwards’ future at Liverpool from the beginning of the season. Now it is confirmed by the club sources that he has decided to leave his post at the end of the 2021/22 season.

It is believed that the 42-years-old is keen to ‘explore new opportunities.’ The experienced professional served as chief scout at both Tottenham and Portsmouth before taking on the Merseyside team’s role. 

He will be missed at Anfield and it remains to be seen if an upheaval is on the cards on and off the field.
