Speaking in his first presser as the manager of Aston Villa (h/t Eurosport), Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard speaks out on the accusation that Villa job is just a stepping-stone while revealing what Jurgen Klopp said to him following his appointment.
Gerrard replaced Dean Smith at Villa Park leaving his previous role at Scottish champions, Rangers. Ever since he entered into the managerial role, there were talks among the fans about him eventually becoming the coach of the Reds.
The Kop legend was accused of using his new team as a means to get to his dream job. He strongly refuted them by saying that he is honoured and is fully committed to his new task. Gerrard also added that there is nothing wrong with having a dream or a goal that drives you forward.
“Very unfair. You’ll never hear me say it’s a stepping stone. I’ll be 100% committed. I don’t think there’s anything wrong in football with having dreams and aspirations.”
The former England midfielder revealed that Klopp greeted him and said he was looking forward to their clash on 11 December. He added that they both are eager to greet each other on the touchline in that fixture.
“He sent me a message and said he’s looking forward to a big hug on the side on 11 December so it’s something for me to look forward to.”
It will be a big day indeed when the Reds legend travel to Anfield as the boss of his new club. His current contract runs until the summer of 2025, whereas the German coach will see his deal expire at the end of the 2023-24 season.
Gerrard will be in his last year with the Lions and could eye the vacant role at his former club should Klopp decide to leave. While he has rejected those accusations of his new job being a stop-gap thing, and rightly so, his dream would still be a return to his beloved club.
