Liverpool have made an approach for Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo
According to Spanish publication El Nacional (h/t Metro), Liverpool are keen on luring Uruguayan ace Ronald Araujo to Anfield. The youngster does not feel valued in Barcelona.
Araujo has become one of the most exciting young talents in Europe. Despite Barcelona’s struggles at the back, the Uruguayan has shown promising performances in recent seasons.
New manager Xavi has praised him publicly for his personality and work rate and appears to rate him highly. But, despite closing on the end of his contract, the Catalan club has yet to propose a renewal to secure the defender’s future.
The Catalans could face difficulty in convincing the youngster who is feeling undervalued at Camp Nou. Araujo is currently one of the lowest earners (less than €500,000 in wages) in Xavi’s team.
Amidst such a situation, Liverpool and Chelsea have shown interest in luring the youngster to England. The Blues find themselves in a difficult situation with the contracts of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, and thus they are keeping a tab on the situation.
However, the Reds have an advantage in the race as they have already opened talks with the 22-year-old player and his family. Furthermore, Jurgen Klopp’s team have offered Araujo twice of what he currently earns at the Catalan club.
Liverpool currently holds a very dynamic centre back line-up. However, there are some uncertainty with specific players. Joe Gomez has been linked with an Aston Villa move amidst a lack of game time. At the same time, Nat Phillips has attracted interest from West Ham.

Thus, if Liverpool eventually loses these two players, they could find themselves lacking in strength in depth. Jurgen Klopp would want to avoid such a situation in any way possible as it could prove detrimental over the course of the season,
Araujo could become a viable alternative in this case. He has already proved his worth in the Champions League and for the national team. He has shown incredible growth, and there’s no better person than Klopp to further nurture his abilities.
