Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders gives updates on Covid positive players
According to the Metro, Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders has suggested that Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara and Curtis Jones remains in home isolation, and the coaching hierarchy will not rush them back into action.
The Reds are facing a severe Coronavirus surge in the first-team squad in recent days. Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara and Curtis Jones all returned positive tests and missed the weekend’s game against Tottenham Hotspur. Their absence has put Reds manager Jurgen Klopp in an uncomfortable situation.
The Merseyside team played Sunday’s game against Tottenham without the four key players, and the consequences were evident. Jurgen Klopp’s team shared a point with Spurs, which could have severe implications on their title race as they have now trail league leaders Manchester City by 3 points.
In a recent interview, Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders gave an update on the health of the four players.
“It’s still the same for Virgil, Fabinho, Thiago, and Curtis Jones, of course, are not in the building; they’re at home.”
Lijnders also suggested that the club will track the players’ health and allow them time to fully recovery.
“we will not rush them back; we will take our time. This virus is really unpredictable, we have to see how each one, if they get sick, have real symptoms.”
These are some vital players for Jurgen Klopp’s squad. Without Van Dijk, the defence will be weaker. On the other hand, Thiago and Fabinho have been the preferred midfield partnership alongside club captain Jordan Henderson this season. In their absence, Klopp have to play James Milner and Naby Keita. Both players have just returned from respective injury breaks. Thus risking them could backfire in the coming weeks.

Jurgen Klopp can get some help from the youth teams, but that wouldn’t guarantee the top-level performances offered by senior players. Thus, the German manager would have to be cautious when picking the team in the coming matchdays.
