Transfer News: Liverpool linked with Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho
According to Mundo Deportivo (h/t Liverpool Echo), The representatives of Philippe Coutinho have received interest from Liverpool.
The Brazilian has seen his stock fall at Barcelona. Coutinho made the switch to the Catalan club in 2018 but it has not gone according to plan. The 29-year-old midfielder has only managed to bag 25 goals and 14 assists in 106 appearances. Furthermore, his overall impact has been limited to say the least..
It is believed that Liverpool has shown an interest in the midfielder. This is not the first time Coutinho has been linked with a return to Anfield. But this time, they have to battle it out with Everton and Newcastle United. Coutinho’s representatives are ‘managing the interest’ at the moment and are waiting for the concerned clubs to make a serious move.
The Selecao star was a fan favourite at Liverpool. The midfielder experienced an emphatic time at Anfield and was a key man in Klopp’s early years. The 29-year-old’s sleek moves and aggressive dribbling skills were fascinating to watch.
Coutinho spent a loan term with Bayern during the 2019/20 season. His output was quite good in that term. But still, that performance didn’t earn him a permanent move to the Bundesliga giants.
On the other hand, Liverpool currently have immense midfield depth in the team. Jurgen Klopp already had Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keïta and James Milner. The arrival of Thiago has made the squad more robust.

Even though the German manager recently faced a mini midfield crisis with injuries to key midfielders, Coutinho is yesteryear’s player and should have no business at Anfield moving forward.. Thus, Reds should look for younger alternatives as without Curtis Jones, there isn’t much fresh blood in Klopp’s team.
