Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders wants head manager role in the future

According to Daily Express, Liverpool assistant manager, Pep Lijnders has revealed his long-term plan to become head manager of a club.

has been involved with Liverpool since 2014. The Dutch manager worked as the head of the U18 team until 2015. Brendon Rodgers appointed him for the assistant manager role.

Even after the arrival of Jurgen Klopp, the 38-year-old kept his job and played an influential role in the team’s recent success. He has even taken control of the senior team at times in the Carabao Cup which shows the trust Klopp has in his right-hand man.

After Liverpool’s League Cup win against Leicester last week, Lijnders was asked whether becoming a head manager is in his plans. The Dutch manager agreed and suggested that he has communicated his interest to Jurgen Klopp. He further added that he would discuss the possibilities with the board after the end of his current term. 

“That’s the plan. That’s the plan, but Jurgen knows this. This isn’t the time to speak about these things because I have a contract until 2024. When the time comes, I will sit down with my management and will see the options I have.”

However, Lijnders also revealed that he has no intentions to leave the Liverpool project at this moment. 

“But we are in the middle of this project, this beautiful project, and after that, I will decide.”

Lijnders has become an important figure in Klopp’s backroom staff. Klopp is not shy to admit time and again that this Liverpool team isn’t just his brainchild, but it works well only with the help of his backroom staff. The Dutchman is vital to how our team plays on the pitch as well.

Jurgen Klopp’s own contract with the Merseyside team ends in 2024. If the former Borussia Dortmund manager leaves Anfield, then it wouldn’t be harmful to at least consider the possibility of Lijnders taking over- but for that, we would have to offer him a new deal.

After all, he has worked with Klopp in close quarters and if he can prove his mettle during that time, who knows, we may see him don the head coach’s gear at Liverpool itself.
