Newcastle United urged to make move for Liverpool striker Divock Origi
Speaking to Football Insider (h/t Mirror), former England international Kevin Phillips is of the opinion that Newcastle United should make a move for Liverpool striker Divock Origi in the January transfer window.
With Origi reduced to playing a ‘super sub’ role under Jurgen Klopp during his time at Anfield, Phillips has urged Newcastle to sign the striker and add a goalscorer to their squad. The Magpies are currently facing a relegation battle and will need all the goals they can muster to stay in the league.
The Magpies are in the midst of a striker crisis due to injuries, and the former Sunderland ace believes Origi is the man to solve it.
“He’s shown that on his day, he’s a handful. And with Callum Wilson injured, it’s a no brainer – 100%.”
Available for just £7m in January, Phillips believes that Origi is the answer to Newcastle’s goalscoring dilemma, having years of experience playing in the Premier League.
The Belgian striker has had a habit of scoring in big games and winning matches in the last minute whilst at Liverpool, and he would certainly be no stranger in front of goal if Newcastle manage to sign him.
Phillips believes that the 26-year-old striker can handle the demands of the Magpies fans and be the hero they need right now to keep the club afloat in the top-flight.
“He’s played in massive games and scored huge goals. It’s not going to affect him, playing in front of 55,000 at St James’ Park – he’s done it all before. The fee is nothing, the wages are not going to be ridiculous. It’s a no brainer, as long as you’re getting the Origi we’ve seen before.”
Newly rich Newcastle United are struggling for form and goals this season despite their massive Saudi Arabian takeover, and in Origi, they might have the cure for their poor performances.
The Magpies have lost goalscorer Callum Wilson to injury and the Englishman may be out for a few months. With Newcastle’s other strikers struggling to step up to Wilson’s mantle, Origi may be the perfect person to help the Tyneside club score goals again.

Backed by mega-rich owners now, Newcastle are not short of funds to bolster their squad, and for the transfer fee quoted for Origi, they could easily sign the Belgian from us.
It would certainly be sad to see one of our own leave in January after amassing a cult status amongst the Anfield faithful, but it would be smart to let Origi go for a fee now than lose him for free in the summer.
