Transfer News: Liverpool show interest in Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic
According to Fichajes (h/t Daily Star), Liverpool could be interested in Inter Milan and Croatian midfielder Marcelo Brozovic
The 29-year-old veteran midfielder put in a solid shift at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium in our latest UEFA Champions League fixture against the Nerazzurri. Despite a spirited performance from the Italian club, the Reds managed to scrape through with a clinical 2-0 victory on the night.
Brozovic was a commanding presence in the middle of the park and is also believed to have impressed Jurgen Klopp. The Croatian professional footballer’s current contract will expire at the end of the season and it is being claimed that the veteran midfielder would not want to sign an extension with his current club.
In the recent past, the Merseysiders have looked to recruit young and upcoming talents into their sides. At 29, Marcelo Brozovic doesn’t fit this profile, but the ability to bring someone with his kind of experience in their roster that too on a free transfer could prove tempting.
Marcelo Brozovic and fitting in at Liverpool
While the Croatian midfielder may not be one of the youngest prospects on the block, he brings a truckload of experience along with him. Brozovic has played 275 matches across all competitions for the Serie A club to date during which time he has managed to chip in with 26 goals and provide 35 assists.
The Anfield outfit does possess an impressive roster of midfielders in their ranks. That being said, the likes of Naby Keita, Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain, and Thiago Alcantara have struggled to maintain their fitness for extended periods of time in recent seasons.
Whilst the Merseysiders have tried their best to create a solid defensive setup ever since FSG took over, there doesn’t seem to be any like-for-like replacement for Fabinho in defensive midfield at the moment.
James Milner can deputise well in that position should the need arise but at 36, one can’t help but wonder how much longer can he be a dependable option in the middle of the park keeping in mind the intense demands of Klopp’s system.
Brozovic could help bridge that gap and provide solid cover for the Reds whenever required should the Brazilian midfielder not be available due to injury. This could also help add more depth in the squad which could help Liverpool to compete at a higher level across several competitions throughout the campaign.
