Highly rated Liverpool youngster pens first professional contract

Liverpool prodigy Calum Scanlon has signed his first professional contract with the club

According to Liverpool Echo, highly-rated 17-year-old left-back Calum Scanlon, who is part of the Reds youth setup, has signed his first professional contract with the Anfield based club.

Scanlon joined the Reds from Birmingham City in February of last year. The U15 England international made his debut for Liverpool’s U18s a short time later, showing good pace down the left flank.

An exciting fullback who loves to get forward, he has been a regular with the u18s, making constant runs on the outside and putting in testing crosses, whilst also proving that he is an able defender.

Although the Liverpool starlet is predominantly a left-back, he can also do a job in midfield. Scanlon joins a list of promising youngsters coming through at Anfield, and if he continues developing consistently, Klopp will be keeping an eye on him.

The next big thing?

The Reds are no strangers to youth team fullbacks going on to become one of the best in the world and will be hoping that Scanlon takes the same path that Trent did at Anfield.

Liverpool already have two quality options at left-back and Calum Scanlon could be another addition to this list in the future.

In Andy Robertson, the Reds have one of the best left-backs in the world. The Scottish defender is excellent going forward and equally adept in defence, and at 27, has many years of top-flight football left in him.

Kostas Tsimikas has proven time and again how good he is, and the Greece international could have been a starter if not for Robertson’s presence. He is as good a back up as one can get, and he is just 25-years-old with a lot of room to improve.

Adding another left-back to the list in Scanlon sounds good from the club’s perspective, but the young kid may get almost no game time which will hamper his development. The good thing for him is that he is just 17, which is a huge difference from the other two.

Klopp could chose to loan out the talented youngster to give him the game time he needs to develop. A couple of loan moves later, Scanlon could be in a position to stake a claim for a backup role to Robertson or Tsimikas initially, and eventually take over as the starting left back.

Scanlon has all the raw materials required to become a huge star at Anfield, and if he can continue developing his game with the right attitude, Liverpool may have yet another gem on their hands.
