“Different class”- Robertson hails three Liverpool stars who impressed against Newcastle

Speaking to BT Sports (h/t The Mirror), Liverpool star Andy Robertson has heaped praise on his teammates Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip

The Reds made several changes to the side that defeated Villarreal midweek for their trip to St James Park. While Jurgen Klopp’s side was not at their clinical best, they still managed to secure all three points thanks to a Naby Keita strike.

Liverpool dominated large chunks of the game and had enough opportunities to put the tie to bed. Unfortunately, their profligacy in front of goal added undue pressure on the defence. In typical Klopp fashion, the rearguard stepped up to the challenge.

The Reds’ famed offside trap was on show, catching Newcastle out nine times on the night. The Magpies’ frontline did their best but the Reds’ backline held their positions and were unbeatable on the night.

Robertson believes the Reds did well to restrict their opponents to a handful of chances. The Scottish skipper believes his teammates at the back deserve special credit for doing so.

“They didn’t have many chances. I thought the two centre-backs and Joe Gomez were different class.”

Robertson was among Liverpool’s best players on the night and kept his energy levels up until the last minute. The defence did not waver one bit despite the pressure applied on them and held their own all night.

Liverpool have not conceded more offside goals this season than actual ones. This, if anything, displays the impact Liverpool’s back four have had on the side this season.

Joe Gomez in particular deserves special praise for stepping in and delivering. Replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold is no mean feat but Gomez did it with minimal fuss. The Reds might or might not win the Premier League this season. Whatever happens, there is every reason to celebrate the players out there in Red.
