Speaking after the 1-0 loss, as quoted by The Liverpool Echo, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has given his verdict on Naby Keita’s goal that saw Liverpool clinch all three points against the Magpies.
In a game between two of the Premier League’s best sides this year, Liverpool came out on top. The scoreline flattered the Magpies given that Jurgen Klopp’s side wasted several clear-cut chances to put the game to bed.
The winner came early in the game in the 19th minute after Liverpool won the ball back from Fabian Schar, who was left injured by a tackle by James Milner. The game was not stopped and the move ended with Keita beating Martin Dubravka.
Referee Andre Marriner’s call did not go down well with the home crowd that booed him roundly. Milner to his credit did win the ball cleanly and thankfully Marriner got the decision right, one of the very few he got right on the night.
Speaking after the game, Howe admitted that he failed to see how the tackle was a foul. It is a refreshing change of view from a rival manager who is open to taking the punch on his chin rather than spinning yarns like Frank Lampard last weekend.
“It looked an untidy coming together but I couldn’t see if there was a foul on Fabian.”
The Newcastle boss went on to add that he hoped VAR would come to his side’s rescue. Thankfully for us, that proved not to be the case. In the end, the decision proved decisive in regards to the result on the night.
“I haven’t seen it back but my initial reaction was we will be lucky if VAR saves us here.”
The win took Liverpool back to the top of the Premier League table for a few hours. Manchester City eventually overtook us after they defeated Leeds United but the title rave is well and truly on.
Newcastle United will face Manchester City next. Hopefully, we have left a sour taste in their mouth and they will put Pep Guardiola’s side to the sword. It could make all the difference in what is a close title race.
