Post Match comments: Jurgen Klopp urges Liverpool fans to not treat draw vs Tottenham like a funeral, makes Man City title claim

Speaking in the post-match interview to the press (h/t Marca in English) after the draw vs Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp asked everyone to stop treating the result as if it were a ‘funeral’.

The Reds drew 1-1 against Antonio Conte’s men, who were clearly the happier side at full time. And after the game, Liverpool fans were perhaps the most dejected they have been following the full-time whistle in any game this season.

It was a draw that felt like a loss. In the title race against Manchester City, it was about who blinks first and as it turns out, it was Klopp’s Liverpool. But the German manager has asked

“First and foremost, we should stop behaving like it is a funeral, in my life much worse things happen. It is an important point, because it is one point more than before the game. From 1-0 down it is massively better, but it was not exactly what we want.”

Manchester City now have the chance to overtake us by three clear points if they manage to beat Newcastle United later today. The Magpies are safe from relegation and too far off the top seven to make it into Europe next season. Essentially, they have very little to play for today.

A dilemma

But if Brighton and Hove Albion’s massive win against Manchester United was anything to go by, then LFC fans can have some hope. The PL has seen crazier things happen in the past. Klopp claims he does not see the Cityzens dropping any points in the next four games, but it is ridiculous to suggest that he has given up in the title race already.

“I can’t see it [Man City dropping points]. I wish I could think differently but I can’t see it.”

Liverpool are guaranteed a second-place finish this season and by tomorrow, will have a clear picture of how to approach the next three games. It would pain any Liverpool fan to hear it, but in case Man City beat the Toons, then perhaps Klopp would be wise to rest our main players against Aston Villa in order to keep them fresh for the month ahead.

We have to see the bigger picture, after all. If we do start a weakened team against the Villans, although there is no indication if that will happen or not, that would not mean giving up in the title race.
