Post-Match Comments: Pep Guardiola cries Liverpool bias after Manchester City beat Newcastle United

Pep Guardiola saw fit to mention Liverpool in his post-match interview despite Manchester City attaining a big win against Newcastle United.

Man City came into this game knowing that a win would put them three points clear of LFC. The Reds dropped points against a defensive-minded Tottenham Hotspur yesterday, which means that City’s 5-0 win vs Newcastle United puts them ahead on goal difference as well.

Speaking to Carrie Brown of beIN Sports after the game, the Spaniard was asked if this win meant that City had their hands on the title. Instead of keeping the focus on his team, the ex-Bayern Munich boss went on to claim that he is happy to have ‘destiny’ in his hands since everyone in the country supports Liverpool.

“Everyone in this country supports Liverpool, the media and everyone… Our destiny is in our hands, this is important.”

He then went on to shoot a veiled dig at the Reds, highlighting their success in Europe perhaps as a set-up to mention the lack of their Premier League titles in the last three decades.

“Liverpool has an incredible history in European competitions… not in Premier League, they’ve won one in thirty years.”

Sour grapes?

Guardiola is perhaps mistaken with his notion that everyone in the country supports Liverpool. Earlier this month, it was his team that needed a big decision going in their favour against Everton to steal a 1-0 win. Of course, supporting one club can make you, at times, feel like your rivals have it easier than your team.

He is seemingly still distraught from the defeat in the UEFA Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid- a competition where Liverpool will play in the final later this month.

The Reds have six European cups/UCL trophies- the most of any English team by a long margin, as compared to Man City’s zero. The final in Paris will be the Reds’ 10th appearance in the last stage of the competition.

City only have one, where they were beaten by a manager who hadn’t even completed six months in charge of Chelsea when lifting the UCL trophy. Guardiola may also be feeling the pressure.

The Cityzens had won the league under managers such as Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini. Given Guardiola’s record with Barcelona, he was arguably brought in to finally bring European glory to the Etihad.

But he has obviously failed to do so, with City fans now used to UCL heartbreak year after year. Moreover, Liverpool’s solitary title win in the last 30 years came after Jurgen Klopp built this team from the ground up and formulated a system that amassed 99 points over the course of a season. Compared to that, City waited 44 years to lift the league between 1968 and 2012.
