Jurgen Klopp confirms Divock Origi will leave Liverpool in the summer transfer window
Speaking in the pre-match press conference (h/t Liverpool Echo) before Liverpool take on Wolves, Jurgen Klopp admitted that Divock Origi is expected to leave the club this summer.
When asked about potential exits, the German claimed that as of now, only the Belgian striker is set to depart Anfield. The former Lille man has had a spectacular few years with LFC despite never becoming a first-team regular.
“We can only do that with those we know definitely, and that’s only Div. Yes, I expect Div to get a special reception and farewell. He is and will be for me forever a Liverpool legend, one of the most important players I ever had.”
It’s always nice when the last game of the season takes place at Anfield, giving the fans a chance to see the team off knowing that the season is fully over. It also gives them an opportunity to bid farewell to Origi, who is nothing short of a legend at the club.
The Reds take on Wolverhampton Wanderers on Merseyside in what is a must-win game for them. The result only matters, however, if Manchester City drop points to Aston Villa- otherwise, the Reds will finish runners-up in the league this season.
What next for Origi?
Origi most recently made a substitute appearance for us in the 2-1 away win at Southampton. It remains to be seen if those were his last minutes in a Liverpool shirt, but with Klopp asking the Reds fans to give the Belgian a fitting farewell, perhaps we can expect an Origi cameo at Anfield.
And after that, the small matter of a UEFA Champions League final in Paris against Real Madrid. The last time the Reds took on a team wearing white in the UCL final, Origi netted a crucial goal to seal Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid.
Earlier in that same season, it was Origi’s brace that completed a historic comeback against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final, where the Reds won 4-3 on aggregate. Perhaps, that performance warranted some minutes for Origi in the final against Spurs.
Roberto Firmino was brought off early in the second half with Liverpool leading 1-0 via an early Mohamed Salah goal. Origi then netted late in the game to send LFC fans around the world into hysterics.
