Transfer News: Liverpool eyeing a move for Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt

According to transfer news on Italian publication Calciomercato (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are ‘thinking about’ making a move for Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt.

The Dutch star has had a mixed time at the Bianconeri since leaving Ajax in 2019. Nevertheless, he has become an important part of their first-team set-up at the tender age of 22, with 41 club appearances in all competitions already this season.

And the Reds are apparently interested in bringing him to Anfield. This news would come as a surprise to many given we only signed Ibrahima Konate last summer.

The young Frenchman has come in from RB Leipzig and become Liverpool’s first-choice centre-back alongside Virgil van Dijk in the UEFA Champions League. With Joel Matip and Joe Gomez already in our ranks, it seems hard for de Ligt to find a place for him in our XI.

VVD – de Ligt reunion at club level?

But then again, if any of our senior defenders leave this summer, signing a quality replacement would make sense. Gomez, for instance, has been linked with a move to Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa in recent times- as per the Mirror around one week ago.

de Ligt, in such a situation, would then seem like a good signing. But then again, it remains to be seen if the Reds offload a senior defender this summer, to begin with.

After all, why fix something that ain’t broke? Liverpool’s solid defence, led by the imperious van Dijk, has been the foundation of their quadruple charge this season. But future-proofing it isn’t a bad idea as well.

If de Ligt joins Anfield and is happy with the role he is assigned in Jurgen Klopp’s first-team set-up, not a lot of LFC fans would mind having him here. After all, he is very young and his imposing physique is a hurdle some of the best attackers struggle to get past.

de Ligt, of course, has partnered Virgil in defence a number of times for the Dutch national team. Reuniting them at Liverpool wouldn’t be a shabby prospect at all, but only if it makes financial sense for the club in the short and the long run.
