Transfer News: PSG striker Kylian Mbappe reveals Liverpool talks were held because of his mom
The Kylian Mbappe transfer saga is finally over, at least for now, and despite being linked with a move to Real Madrid and Liverpool, he has penned a new deal at PSG.
The French striker was set to become a free agent this year and admittedly turned down a move to Los Galacticos recently. Speaking to The Telegraph (Subscription Required), he revealed he came close to joining the Reds in 2017.
“I talked to Liverpool because it’s the favourite club of my mum, my mum loves Liverpool. I don’t know why, you will have to ask her! It’s a good club and we met them five years ago. When I was in Monaco I met them. It’s a big club.”
Liverpool fans would now be wondering what would have been had Mbappe penned a deal to join the Reds from AS Monaco in 2017. Mbappe has gone on to become a worldwide sensation with PSG paying an astounding €180million in transfer fees to turn his loan move permanent in 2018.
To think Liverpool could have had him for the past five or so years makes one wonder if Klopp may have won more trophies during that stint. The Reds were an exciting sporting project in the summer of 2017.
Mbappe to LFC?
But they were yet to win anything under Jurgen Klopp until then and barely finished fourth after beating Arsenal to the last UCL spot for next season by a solitary point. The Reds managed to reach the final of the Champions League in 2018.
And it was largely down to us signing Virgil van Dijk midway through that season and Mohamed Salah in the summer window where we apparently failed to sign Mbappe. It is safe to say both these players have become legends at the club already.
Could the Reds have sustained having a player like Mbappe on their hands? Maybe not. Jurgen Klopp hinted earlier this month that LFC ‘cannot be a part of these battles’, perhaps hinting at the costs involved in signing the France international.

Sky News believe he will earn around £1m-a-week on his new contract in Paris while already pocketing a £100m signing fee. It is better for the Reds, in that case, to follow the model of signing quality players and then turning them into superstars rather than splashing the cash on readymade world beaters- Thiago perhaps being an exception to that logic.
But if Mbappe was to ever come to England, hopefully his mother, who would now be a hit amongst LFC fans, nudges her son into joining the Merseyside giants.
