Liverpool isn’t trying to force Neco Williams out the door. According to the Liverpool Echo, the club has set a £15 million price tag on Williams in anticipation of increased interest in the right-back.

Williams’ status has risen significantly as a result of an outstanding loan stay with Fulham in the second part of the season, where he helped the club win the Championship championship and gain promotion to the Premier League. 

The 21-year-old was also a member of the Wales team that overcame Ukraine 1-0 on Sunday to earn World Cup qualifying for the first time in 64 years.

Williams progressed through the Reds’ development system before making his first-team debut in October 2019. With Trent Alexander-Arnold tough to shift at right-back, the 21-year-old has battled for game time.

While the Reds are seeking £15 million for his services, which is similar to the asking price for Nat Phillips, who shone in a similar loan move to Bournemouth, they will be happy to keep a player who came through the Academy ranks and has made 33 senior appearances, despite playing only 84 minutes in the Premier League since December 2020, with Trent Alexander-Arnold clearly the first-choice right-back.

At the moment, Liverpool’s only recognised right-back is Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Englishman suffered an injury against Arsenal recently, and Jurgen Klopp must now decide how to handle the matter.

However, in order to ensure the team’s long-term success, Liverpool would require a backup for the right-back position, which would ultimately fill the vacuum left by Neco. Purchasing a high-profile athlete may not be the wisest decision, since Alexander-Arnold is presently ranked among the best in the world in his position.

In such a case, Liverpool might benefit from Neco’s assistance next season, whenever he returns from Fulham to gain experience. For the time being, we have Joe Gomez to fill in, although the ex-Charlton Athletic man isn’t the most proficient attacking full-back, as most Liverpool supporters would agree.

It’s evident that he won’t be able to catch Trent here at Liverpool in terms of regular game time, so perhaps creating a mark elsewhere might be the best option for the player right now.
