Report: Serie A MVP on Liverpool’s radar turns down two-year contract extension

Transfer News: Rafael Leao turns down new AC Milan contract amidst Liverpool interest

According to Italian outlet La Stampa (h/t Liverpool Echo), Rafael Leao has rejected a new contract offer from AC Milan.

The Portuguese winger has been linked with a move to Liverpool, with Arsenal and Manchester City also keen on a move. He had a breakthrough season in Italy as Milan won the Scudetto this summer.

The recently-turned 23-year-old winger won the Serie A MVP Awards for the season and was arguably the man that spearheaded the Rossoneri

to their first league title since the 2010/11 campaign.

His current deal expires in 2024 and the Italian club wanted to extend it by a further two years, including an increase in his weekly wages. But he has seemingly turned down that offer.

No use for Leao at LFC?

Dictated by common sense, such a move could mean only one of two things. Either he wants a better offer from his current club, or he is eyeing a move elsewhere.

If the latter turns out to be the case, then the Reds would be smart to strike a deal, but not at any price. The attack is one area where the club seems loaded, at least for now.

Despite Sadio Mane’s links to Bayern Munich, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz have strengthened our frontline as compared to how it stood at the turn of the year.

Leao is a young, agile, and dynamic winger with a bright future ahead of him. But he is a player that we don’t really have any use for right now. Revisiting this interest in the future, however, could be a wise move- given his obvious talent.

He also has two years on his current deal and it would be illogical on Milan’s part if they let one of their best young players leave on the cheap.
