With Manchester City signing Erling Haaland and Liverpool getting a deal across the line for Darwin Nunez, the world will see two of the finest young strikers play in the Premier League next season.
The Cityzens paid an initial £51million in transfer fees to Borussia Dortmund for the Norwegian, while Nunez has been signed for an initial fee of £64million. Add-ons and wages will, of course, increase that figure.
But that is hardly something that will bother fans of both these teams. Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp now have strikers they can build their attack around.
Given that the two transfers have taken place within just days of each other, it is expected that everyone would be making comparisons about which striker is better and which team got a better deal.
And according to Mirror Sport columnist Stan Collymore, Nunez is more of a risk and gamble as compared to Haaland. However, he quickly goes on to clarify that the 22-year-old South American is still a top player.
“Nunez is not as guaranteed as Haaland, who at international level and at Borussia Dortmund has had a proper grounding and learned to deal with expectations at a level Nunez has not. That’s not to say Nunez hasn’t had a great season at Benfica, because he has…”
He isn’t entirely wrong. Haaland has scored goals for fun in Austria with RB Salzburg, for the Norway national team, and during his stint at Signal Iduna Park. Nunez, meanwhile, just has one very good season in Europe to talk about- where he scored 34
goals in all competitions in the latest campaign.“But he’s still way more of a risk and a gamble than Haaland, even though for Liverpool it’s a risk that’s worth taking.”
Collymore then states that the Primeira Liga isn’t as strong as the Bundesliga and that the onus is now on Klopp to turn Nunez into a world-beater. Those that have seen the German at work would trust him to do just that.
While our ex-player does make sense, we can all have a better opinion of the two stars once they complete their first season in the PL. Right now, Nunez may seem like more of a risk, but so did Luis Suarez when we brought him in from Ajax, with the world-class Fernando Torres going to Chelsea.
And we all know how that turned out.
