Romano: Liverpool cult-hero set to leave England this week for medical at new club

Fabrizio Romano: Liverpool hero Divock Origi set for AC Milan medical this week

According to reliable transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool striker Divock Origi is set to be in Italy this week in order to complete his move to AC Milan.

The Reds have chosen not to retain the Belgian striker beyond this season and he will leave as a free agent. The Serie A winners are outright favourites to sign him, pending formalities.

This brings to an end a long career where Origi had his fair share of ups and downs. Signed from Lille after the FIFA World Cup 2014, the Belgian did not get a lot of playing time with the Reds.

The trend improved under Jurgen Klopp later on, who started playing Origi every now and then. By 2019, Origi had established himself as an important player for the Reds.

Origi to AC Milan?

But later that year, he cemented himself in the club’s history after his performances against Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Champions League. He was also a part of Liverpool’s title challenge that season.

But at 27, it isn’t really feasible for Origi to keep being a bit-part player for us. The Red Devils play in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar this year and the Belgian striker needs to prove his worth to Roberto Martinez.

The Reds may have signed Darwin Nunez, but does that really replace Origi’s presence? The Uruguayan forward will aim to be a regular starter under Jurgen Klopp.

Sadio Mane is set to seal a move to Bayern Munich but Luis Diaz can fill the void left by him on the left flank. Amidst this, perhaps one of Diogo Jota or Roberto Firmino can try to replicate his impact here.

Origi’s speciality was coming on and directly impacting games. He just had that X-factor about him on the big occasions. This could be a bigger blow for LFC than they currently imagine it to be.
