According to BBC journalist Natalie Jackson (h/t Liverpool Echo), Nottingham Forest are doing everything they can to sign Liverpool defender Neco Williams after already sealing a deal for ex-LFC striker Taiwo Awoniyi.
The Welsh star was loaned out to Fulham earlier this year as he struggled to get playing time at Liverpool. Trent Alexander-Arnold is our first-choice right-back while Joe Gomez was seen deputising for him towards the tail end of the season.
And that competition will only increase from this summer. The Reds have signed Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen, with the teenage Scotsman looking to make a mark on the first team as soon as possible.
Williams would like to think he has what it takes to be a regular Premier League footballer. He has 21 caps for Wales and is an important part of Rob Page’s set-up. If he wants to make the plane to Qatar this year as a fixed starter, regular minutes at club level will be crucial.
At 21, Neco needs to take a decision regarding his career. Trent is young and not going away from our first-team picture anytime soon.
Ramsay would have been signed with a plan in mind. It would be odd otherwise for Jurgen Klopp to spend money on a player he doesn’t plan on using- the example of Ben Davies aside.
All that would stand between Ramsay and regular first-team football at Forest would be 27-year-old right-back Richie Laryea. Fulham have apparently been in contention to sign Williams too.
The youngster has had minutes for us in the past but always seemed like an unfinished product- although at his age, we can’t expect anything more. It’s best if he moves elsewhere to continue his development because at Anfield, Klopp knows TAA is his main man.
