, Elliott will wear the jersey number that was last worn by Ozan Kabak. The Turkish starlet joined the Reds from FC Schalke on loan in January 2021.He was handed the number 19 kit but struggled for regular playing time for us, with Jurgen Klopp trusting Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips instead. Before Kabak, it was Sadio Mane who wore that number for a couple of seasons.
The Senegal international got the number 10 jersey a few years back but has since vacated it following a move to Bayern Munich. When a young player makes it into the senior team from the academy, they often wear unconventional kit numbers.
While it isn’t a hard and fast rule, we often see the numbers 1 to 40 handed to important senior players. There would be, of course, several exceptions to it.
Ronaldinho donned the number 80 jersey at AC Milan while Trent Alexander-Arnold still wears the number 66 kit despite Nathaniel Clyne vacating number 2 a while back.
A switch to number 19 underlines the gradual upgrade that Elliott can expect going into the next season. The Englishman is still young and Jurgen Klopp saw what playing him a lot can do at this young age.
Elliott was handed regular minutes in central midfield until a horror injury against Leeds United. He has since returned and would look to now take the next step in his career by becoming a more regular part of Klopp’s senior side.
Hopefully, he lives up to the legacy of number 19 that Mane set before him and not the ones set by the likes of Ozan Kabak and Javier Manquillo.
