According to the Liverpool Echo
, four Liverpool players were spotted wearing new kit numbers in the pre-season training session this week. The Reds gathered back at the AXA Training Centre to get the preparations started for the new season, and Tyler Morton was one of the four Reds stars spotted donning a new kit number in the training ground.
Having worn 80 earlier, he was seen wearing number 43, while young Dutch defender Sepp van den Berg seems to have swapped number 72 for 39. Leighton Clarkson
was first seen wearing number 65 when he broke through the Reds ranks. But he was now spotted with the number 38 training kit. Melkamu Frauendorf, the Ethiopian-born midfielder, had number 94 last season but it seems that he has now been handed the 58 kit number.
These are, of course, not written in stone. Training kit numbers don’t necessarily have to mean that the players will be sporting those kit numbers, but it is a very strong hint that they might.
This comes after Harvey Elliott’s high-profile number switch from 67 to 19 earlier this month. The Englishman is set to have an important role in Jurgen Klopp’s team this season and the change in kit number reflects that.
That number was, of course, won by the great Sadio Mane during his initial season with the Reds. As for the aforementioned quartet, it doesn’t seem like anyone is close to becoming a regular for Klopp just yet.
Morton, perhaps, is the only name that sticks out- one we can see getting playing time here and there next season. Traditionally, lower kit numbers mean increasing importance for the player in the team.
This is especially the case when a player gets a number in the 30s or below after having an obscure kit number before that. Of course, this is no proven theory and there would be countless exceptions even if it was.
But hopefully, it means that Klopp has spotted a handful of youngsters that he thinks can hack it at the very top level.
