From what comes as a surprising piece of news, the Mirror claims that Liverpool considered a move for Raheem Sterling, who is now set to join Chelsea.
It is believed that the Blues beat the Reds, PSG, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, and Real Madrid in order to get their hands on the Manchester City star. Sterling has agreed on personal terms with the West Londoners.
And a move this summer seems imminent. Chelsea will apparently pay a fee of £45million and have offered him a raise on the salary he earned at Man City, which was around a massive £300,000 per week.
The deal is set to be completed in time so that Sterling can fly off with the Blues squad for their pre-season tour in the USA. It is understandable why some of the aforementioned clubs were linked with a move for Sterling.
But Liverpool’s name there raises eyebrows, to say the very least. Sterling, according to Liverpool’s title-winning ex-captain Steve McMahon, departed the club ‘disgracefully‘ back in 2015.
Joining a title rival when the club needed him the most- the majority of our fanbase hasn’t forgiven him for that. If you need evidence, just rewind any Man City vs Liverpool tie after that move at Anfield and hear the crowd’s reaction whenever Sterling gets the ball.
Moreover, the salary being quoted above is a big amount, even if the transfer fee in itself doesn’t seem exorbitant. Mohamed Salah is staying with us until 2025 so there’s no real place for him in our starting XI.
It is highly unlikely that a player of his status would have wanted to wait that long to potentially replace Mo, and it would have been one of the most surprising transfers this summer had he returned to LFC- a club whose fans don’t really hold him in high regard anymore.
It’s for the best that he didn’t come back to Anfield. We have plenty of attackers and there’s no need to go looking for players that jumped ship when our football club was in dire need of their services.
