As per Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport via Paisley Gates (h/t Liverpool Echo), Chelsea have made a bid of around £67.5million for Liverpool target Matthijs de Ligt.
Bayern Munich are also in the race for the Dutchman and can offer up to £63.5million for him. The Reds have been linked with him recently but it seems that the Blues and the Bavarians are ahead of us in the transfer race.
The Juve star joined from Ajax Amsterdam three years back in 2019 and has been a mainstay in their defence for a while now. Still 22, there is a long way to go in his playing career.
Any team would be lucky to have a player of his ilk in their squad. But right now, it is hard to imagine the Reds going all out for the player this summer.
Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip are our main men at the back, while Ibrahima Konate is the up-and-coming star in defence. Joe Gomez, meanwhile, has extended his deal to 2027, sealing his long-term future with us.
Chelsea’s need is understandable. They no longer have Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen. Thiago Silva edges close to retirement every passing year while their other defensive options are underwhelming.
The Reds, meanwhile, have no such worries. Four quality centre-backs are enough for a whole season, with Fabinho having experience of playing in that position before.
This is a deal best left for Chelsea and Bayern to fight out amongst themselves. The Reds would be wise to look elsewhere and spend such money on a player that can actually improve our starting XI.
