According to Italian outlets La Gazzetta Dello Sport and Corriere dello Sport via Paisley Gates (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are ‘plotting’ deals for Juventus stars Matthijs de Ligt and Adrien Rabiot.
The 22-year-old Dutch centre-back is the subject of interest from several European giants in Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Manchester United, PSG, and Manchester City. He is apparently valued in excess of £85million.
Meanwhile, Rabiot is said to cost potential suitors around £17million. That would take the combined sum to £102m, although that doesn’t factor in the negotiating capabilities of the Reds if they were to formalise their interest in the duo.
A deal for the ex-Ajax defender makes no sense whatsoever, especially after news of Joe Gomez signing a new Liverpool contract. That effectively means the Reds are sorted for the next few years in terms of their defensive line.
Virgil van Dijk is perhaps the first name on Jurgen Klopp’s teamsheet alongside the likes of Alisson Becker and Mohamed Salah. Joel Matip is a reliable partner for the Dutchman, while Ibrahima Konate is next in line for playing time.
Gomez has struggled for regular starts recently but one injury to our main men in defence, and the Englishman would be right back into our starting XI on a more regular basis.
Rabiot, meanwhile, is a deal worth looking at. At 27, he is in his prime physical years and has the experience of playing at massive clubs such as Juventus and PSG. Not to mention, he has been capped by France several times.
We are yet to sign a senior central midfielder after Georginio Wijnaldum’s departure to PSG in 2021. Since then, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has fallen way down the pecking order and fans would certainly want central midfield to be the area we make a signing in next.
