Liverpool sell 27-year-old defender for a profit despite no senior appearances for the club

Transfer News: Liverpool sell Ben Davies to Rangers for a profit after nightmare Anfield spell

According to Sky Sports, Liverpool have agreed on a £4million fee with Rangers to sell Ben Davies. The English defender is yet to kick a ball for the Reds in a competitive game.

The 27-year-old centre-back spent some time at Sheffield United on loan after failing to get even a single minute of competitive football for LFC in the 2020/21 season.

Along with Ozan Kabak, Davies was signed in the closing stages of the 2021 winter transfer window. The Reds were going through an unprecedented injury crisis in their backline then.

But despite the unavailability of our senior defenders, Davies failed to go above Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams in the pecking order. Jurgen Klopp’s treatment of Davies was odd.

Why agree to spend £1.6million on a player that isn’t playing in the direst times for the club? While some wouldthe signing a total failure on the club’s part, the narrative can change for good now.

The Reds have sold Davies for a £3million

fee up-front which could rise to £4million with achievable add-ons. In terms of transfer fee and transfer fee only, that is a neat little profit on the player.

The former Preston North End defender has raked in some minutes with the Reds during pre-season.

But he leaves Anfield without playing a single minute of competitive football in a Liverpool shirt. For a player who was on our books for one and a half years, that is certainly odd.

He leaves as a player that may well be forgotten by Liverpool fans down the line. Or perhaps, the peculiarity of his situation with our club would etch his name in the mind of Reds fans for a long time to come.

Nevertheless, we wish Davies all the success in Scotland. He joins a side that was managed by LFC legend Steven Gerrard, until he took up the job to manage Aston Villa in the Premier League last season.
